Bono’s daughter has seen her star rise overnight thanks to a starring role in the hotly-anticipated US series, The Knick, opposite Clive Owen.

The 23-year-old told the Daily Beast that her parents were initially wary about her foray into the acting world until they realised how passionate she was about pursuing a career as a screen star.

“My parents were being protective of me and I honestly didn’t think they would have been good parents if they weren’t wary of me, their daughter, entering the entertainment industry,” she said.

“They wanted to make sure I really knew what I was signing up for and that I was serious. I basically said to my dad that, look, I’m just as passionate about movies as you were about music, and when you were 18 you wouldn’t let anyone stop you so you’ve got to let me do this.

“He was like, ‘Oh shit. I do.’ He was like, ‘Crap.’ He didn’t take no for an answer when he was 18 so I have that in my genes.”

The Dubliner, who has bagged a string of movie roles in recent years, said her status as the daughter of one of the most famous rock stars in the world simply doesn’t matter when it comes to casting.

“What’s great about Hollywood is that it is so cut-throat, and it really doesn’t matter who you are.

“If you’re not right for the part, you’re not right the part. No director is going to sacrifice their film because they want someone’s famous kid in it for a headline.

“I don’t walk into a room thinking about what other people are thinking of me. Maybe they’ve googled my name before, but I don’t think about it.”

The Knick, a medical series centred on a maverick doctor played by Clive Owen, sees Hewson playing a naive nurse from West Virginia working in the Knickerbocker Hospital in New York at the start of the 20th century.

“She is quite the sweet character. She’s so curious and naive. I couldn’t help falling in love with that,” the actress revealed.

She said her parents are delighted that she landed the role. “Now they’re so proud of me... They want to see the show, and they’re so upset because they’re going to be in Ireland and I don’t think it’s coming out in Ireland until September.”
