Mr McKenna described the saga as hugely regretful and outlined the financial hit that the GAA has taken.

“It’s lost revenue rather than cost, it would have been in the order of €5m,” he revealed as he launched a passionate defence of Croke Park’s reputation generally.

“What happened was a complete fiasco in terms of administration. Nothing went wrong with the stadium. We’ve never had any issue with Croke Park that’s caused any fan or anyone attending or anyone playing there an issue, ever.”

He rejected suggestions that US fans who have booked flights and tickets for a college football game there on August 30 — 16,000 so far — may be worried after the incident.

He said the game between Penn State and University of Central Florida will benefit the economy to the tune of around €30m.
