Dead baby found in bin

-Mother tells gardaí of tragedy

A postmortem examination is due to be carried out today on the body of a newborn baby who was discovered in a bin at the back of a house in a suburb on the south side of Cork City.

Gardaí were alerted to the discovery after the mother of the infant, believed to be in her early 20s, presented herself at Anglesea Street Garda Station in Cork City yesterday afternoon. She reported that she had given birth to the child a few days earlier.

Gardaí subsequently went to the address the woman had given them, where they discovered the body of the newborn baby girl in a bin at the rear of the house.

It is unclear at this stage how the baby died.

The scene continued to be preserved by gardaí last night.

The remains of the infant were removed to Cork University Hospital, where assistant State pathologist Margaret Bolster is due to carry out a postmortem examination today.

The results of the postmortem examination will determine the course of any subsequent Garda investigation.
