Grand design: Team carves huge maze into maize field
A team armed with GPS devices and cutting equipment moved in to a field in West Cork yesterday to carve a huge maze into an eight-acre field of corn maize.
And at its heart will be a giant logo for Cork’s RedFM radio station.
It’s all the brainchild of Geoff Wycherley in Rosscarbery, who wanted to create a new attraction in the area.
Geoff’s parents opened a golf range in the village 21 years ago. Three years ago, he opened the Smugglers Cove Adventure Centre, which now has an 18-hole, pirate-themed adventure golf course, a timber maze and a café.
“I am always looking at unique attractions to add to the centre, and earlier this year, I decided to grow a corn maize maze on land adjoining the centre,” he said.
He approached Cork’s Red FM with his idea to carve its logo into the corn, and they jumped at the idea. While cutting has started this week, the maize won’t reach its full height until August. Once the maze opens, the maize will be about seven-feet high, with paths ranging from five feet to 10 feet wide, featuring puzzles, chill-out areas and viewing points to enjoy Rosscarbery and Galley Head Lighthouse.
An American maize maze design company have designed the feature, and Kieran O’Brien form Geodata Surveying Ltd in Bandon plotted the maze design into a handheld GPS unit, which was being used to direct the cutting team yesterday.
The maze will be open from 11am to 6pm daily until the end of August and for weekends only in September.
