Mein Gott: Publican counts the cost of Germany’s record World Cup rout
Hoping to cash in on the euphoria of the first semi-final, Greg Healy, proprietor of Róisín Dubh bar in Galway City, put on a special beer promotion.
For every goal Germany would score, the price of a pint of Erdinger would drop 50c. A Brazilian beer, Brahma, was also on offer under the same terms.
The bar was busy by kick-off, with no one expecting the goal and beer bonanza that was to unfold.
“When the first German goal went in, the price dropped straight away from €4 a pint to €3.50 and the lads had a bit of a laugh at that.
“But by half-time when it was 5-0 the price was down to €1.50 and word spread. We had about 150 in the place for the second half, but that’s not even full for us,” said Greg.

By the time the seventh goal hit the Brazilian net, pints of Erdinger were being snapped up for just 50c.
Ironically, not even the lone consolation goal for the host nation tempted any of the punters to order a pint of Brazilian beer.
“It was all a bit of fun and nobody went mad ordering five or six pints. Everybody enjoyed the laugh and I suppose we only sold about 200 pints of Erdinger over the night.”
Greg didn’t mind picking up the tab for the cut-price beer as he drew Holland in the World Cup sweep and his brother and partner, Kevin, got Germany.
The same deal was on offer at Róisín Dubh last night with 50c coming off a pint of Heineken every time Holland scored a goal in their semi-final against Argentina.
And it will be more of the same on Sunday during the World Cup final, with 50c off Erdinger again.
“It’s not as if there’s any chance of a team scoring seven goals again in the final — is there?” wondered Greg.
