Alan Kelly, who took half the votes to secure Labour’s number two position, also hit out at Sinn Féin’s “authoritarian” style and indicated he would not support a coalition with them after the next election, due in just over 18 months.

Mr Kelly, who is tipped for promotion to cabinet level as Jobs Minister if Tánaiste Joan Burton can wrest the portfolio from Fine Gael’s grip, said trading of departments would take place.
