It stands out like the proverbial green field on the mountain, to be admired for miles around.

The highest field in Ireland goes out to pasture

Comprising 15 acres reclaimed from scrubland by sheep farmer John Joy, at Coolroe, in the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, in Co Kerry, this piece of ground is claimed to be the highest field being re-seeded in Ireland at present.

Given its elevation, 1,000 feet above sea level, it’s no surprise that the field also commands some splendid views.

Situated on the slope rising to Beenkeragh Mountain, it sits in the foothills of Carrauntoohil, while the Atlantic and the Stacks Mountains can be seen in the distance.

Climbers taking on Carrauntoohil from the Lislibane side can also get a good view of the field.

The reclamation work has been carried out by contractor John O’Connor and the field will be used as a permanent sheep pasture.

The grass is expected to be grown in six weeks.
