Mortgage debt rules have been relaxed in order to stop people coming up to retirement being forced to sell their homes.

Central Bank governor Patrick Honohan has amended guidelines critics said were causing undue hardship to older people trapped in debt.

Under a more flexible system, rules preventing people who have retired from continuing to be engaged in a resolution process have been dropped.
