Garda whistleblower told he destroyed force

Garda whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe, whose actions led to a malpractice inquiry, has been told by senior officers he has destroyed the force.

Despite vindication in a report by barrister Seán Guerin, Sgt McCabe has made a complaint that he is still suffering abuse.

He was pictured during the election campaign in Mullingar meeting Enda Kenny while on duty. However, the Dáil heard last night he “is not in work today, nor was he there yesterday. He is suffering harassment and abuse”. The revelations were made by Independent TD Mick Wallace.

“He’s been told by senior officers that he has destroyed the force,” said Mr Wallace. “He has reported the abuse through the proper channels and still there is no change.

“It’s hard to believe that a man who has been so selfless and relentless in the pursuit of justice should be treated like this given all we now know.”

Independent Clare Daly said a letter informing Sgt McCabe he was allowed back on the Pulse system was “at best begrudging”.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said she is committed to restoring trust in An Garda Síochána.
