The Taoiseach has led tributes to the country’s longest serving councillor who attended his last local authority meeting last night ahead of his retirement from politics.

Veteran Fine Gael councillor Jim Corr, who was elected to the then Cork Corporation on the second Monday of May, 1973, is known as the father of Cork City Council.

He served two terms as Lord Mayor, served on the board of the Cork VEC and Cork Opera House, and is the city’s longest serving elected public representative since records began in 1899.
