Welfare fraud tracked to Australia

Initiatives to target welfare fraud have saved millions of euro and identified people illegally drawing down payments as far away as Australia.

Multiple claims by individuals last year, the use of fake identities, and welfare tourism, were all investigated by Department of Social Protection officials.

Officers also focused their attention on people working in fast food outlets who were claiming dole, as well as casual drivers working “off the books”.
