Man snatched ex-partner’s pet terrier ‘to antagonise her’
He forced his way into her house and decided to snatch her pet terrier.
Markham, 25, of Clonlara, Co Clare, pleaded guilty at Limerick District Court to entering his former partner’s house at Cliona Park, Moyross, as a trespasser with intent to cause an offence.
Sgt Donal Cronin said that on December 2 last, gardaí received a report regarding an incident at Cliona Park. Arriving at the scene, they spoke to the injured party and learned the accused had gone off with her dog after forcing the front door open.
She had been in a relationship with Markham and there was an issue over access to their daughter.
Judge Eugene O’Kelly asked if the taking of the pet dog was to agitate the mother of their child.
John Herbert, solicitor, said the genesis of the matter lies with access to the defendant’s daughter with his ex-partner. Mr Herbert said Markham had not seen the child for six months.
Judge O’Kelly stated: “Stealing her pet dog does not improve his chances of seeing his daughter. Was he trying to trade one against the other.”
Mr Herbert replied: “Taking the dog was to antagonise his ex-partner.”
Judge O’Kelly added: “There are family law courts to settle these matters. Taking the dog was not the way to do it.”
Mr Herbert said the dog had been returned unharmed after Markham cooled down.
The court heard €500 damage had been caused to the door of the house which was the property of Limerick City Council.
Judge O’Kelly adjourned the case to June 4 to enable Markham pay for the cost of repairs.
