Rugby star’s father may miss match after ordeal at hands of thief
The 74-year-old was home alone near Limerick city when an intruder, wearing a balaclava, left him tied and gagged for over two hours late on Thursday. The raider escaped with a small amount of cash.
After his horrific ordeal, Don Reddan said yesterday: “I’m fine now, but it was a bad experience. I don’t know if I will be going or not to the match in France to see Eoin play.”
He was released from hospital yesterday.
Recovering from a triple bypass, the retired insurance broker was at home at Sharavogue on the Patrickswell Road, when the intruder assaulted him shortly after 10.30pm.
Earlier, he had been watching golf on TV with his brother, Pat, who lives in Ballyclough. Shortly after his brother left, Mr Reddan was in the kitchen when a man entered through a back door demanding: “Where’s the money?” The man held a hatchet.
A friend said: “He ordered Don to sit on a chair. The raider produced masking tape and cable ties. He tied Don’s hands behind his back and his feet with the cable ties and then started to tape him around the chest and legs onto the chair. He also gagged Don by putting tape across his mouth.
“He got free after about two hours and struggled to a neighbour’s house who raised the alarm.”
His son Diarmuid, 44, said: “He was shaken, but after a good rest he seems OK.”
Detectives yesterday carried out a forensic examination of the house and car.
He is a well-known figure in Limerick rugby and a lifelong member of Old Crescent. His wife Geraldine died three years ago.
