Personal Choice artists in once-off Limerick show
The exhibition is by some of the country’s best known artists, all of whom are associated with Limerick School of Art and Design.
The Personal Choice exhibition was curated by well-known artist John Shinnors to mark Limerick’s year as national City of Culture.
Earlier this year, Shinnors controversially dismissed the rows which dogged the launch of the programme insisting “75% of people are uncultured anyway”.
However, last night, the artist was the toast of a weekend of extraordinary artistic expression in Limerick, as his Personal Choice exhibition was launched 24 hours after hundreds queued for the opening night of the internationally renowned Enclave exhibition by Richard Mosse, which runs until May 5..
Shinnors’ exhibition at the Church Gallery in the LSAD Clare Street campus comprises the works of 20 distinguished former students of the Limerick Institute of Technology-run school.
The exhibition was the brainchild of Mike Fitzpatrick, head of the LSAD and interim head of Limerick City of Culture.
Fitzpatrick approached his long-time friend and one of the school’s most distinguished alumni with the task of creating an event that would celebrate the school’s imprint on the cultural fabric of Limerick and Ireland.
Shinnors said: “The artists I have asked to participate in this exhibition are makers and creators and while having a lively sense of tradition, all have an imaginative and original response to the subject matter they’re engaged with.
“This results in their work being both stimulating and inspiring. I thank them for accepting my invitation to participate in this exhibition.”
According to Mike Fitzpatrick, young artists will take great inspiration from this exhibition and the general public will have an opportunity to enjoy “what really is a once-off collection of incredible work” from the 20 participating artists.
