Three hurt after lorry hits 4x4 stopped on motorway
The accident occurred shortly after noon on the northbound carriageway of the motorway between Fermoy and Mitchelstown.
All three occupants were taken to Cork University Hospital, one by air ambulance and the other two by road. The precise condition of the most seriously injured occupant is not known but his injuries are understood to be extensive.
All three occupants of the Toyota had to be cut free by emergency services as the vehicle was virtually demolished after being hit by the articulated truck.
The driver of the truck escaped injury but was said to be suffering from shock after the accident.
The accident occurred in the Kilworth area after the Moorepark junction near Fermoy. The precise location was between Junction 14 Fermoy and Junction 13 on the Mitchelstown side of the motorway.
The jeep, which is believed to have broken down, was parked on the motorway’s hard shoulder when it was struck by the large, unladen truck.
A local garda spokesperson said they understood the male passenger flown to hospital did not have life-threatening injuries but this could not be confirmed last night.
As the accident occurred on the hard shoulder of the motorway, traffic was not seriously disrupted, although a section of motorway was closed for a time with diversions put in place by gardaí.
