Bob Dylan and Lana del Ray among top Marquee line up

Icon of popular culture Bob Dylan likes playing in Cork so much he’s agreed to perform again at this year’s Live at the Marquee.

It will be Dylan’s third time gigging at the venue and, according to music promoter Peter Aiken, “he wouldn’t keep coming back unless he enjoyed it”.

The legend will play at the venue on June 16 and will do another gig in Dublin the following night.

Peter Aiken said he expected the Cork gig to sell out very quickly as Dylan wasn’t playing any dates in Britain this summer. Tickets for the performance will go on sale on February 20.

Dylan was among three big stars announced for Live at the Marquee yesterday by Aiken Promotions.

Imelda May, whose shows have sold out for the past two years, is back again on June 21 and Lana Del Rey, who Mr Aiken described as “an incredible live performer,” is booked in for July 15.

Tickets for both these performances will go on sale next Monday, February 17.

They will join a line-up which includes household names such as Cliff Richard, Dolly Parton, The Coronas, Robert Plant and Tom Jones.

Live at the Marquee is celebrating its 10th year and Mr Aiken says he sees no reason why the popular event won’t go on for several more years.

“The first couple of years were the hardest, but it’s getting stronger all the time. I hope more Irish bands will emerge in the coming years (to play here).”

He said he saw no need to increase the 5,000-capaity at the venue “because it works with what we have”.

Mr Aiken said he hoped to announce another three big acts, which would bring the number performing this summer to 22.

He said he was particularly anxious to see Christy Moore perform for the 10th year in succession.

“It will be very interesting. He’s putting together a new band and I’ve only seen him with Planxty and Moving Hearts.”

The promoter confirmed Garth Brooks won’t be playing at the venue this year, but added he hoped to see him gig in the city some day.
