Death threat against Irish soldier from ‘terror group’

Gardaí are investigating a death threat against an Irish soldier purported to have been made by a republican terrorist group.

The soldier, based at Finner Camp, Co Donegal, has received security advice from the Special Detective Unit, which combats subversive crime.

Gardaí took the threat very seriously and informed the man. Following a security assessment, he was not placed under Garda protection. The soldier is understood to be living in the camp, which mitigates any threat. Gardaí have given him security advice.

The threat was made using the name of a Derry-based republican terror group, which has carried out bomb attacks and shootings, including murder.

Gardaí are investigating the source of the threat and possible reasons behind it. They will examine if there are any local issues and any connections between suspects and the terror group. They will probe the possibility the group was simply used by the perpetrator.
