Woman dies after being hit by car as she pushed child in pram

A woman was killed yesterday after she was hit by a car while pushing a pram in Balbriggan.

The child she was with survived but was injured and taken to Temple Street Children’s Hospital.

The driver of the car that hit them was taken to Beaumont Hospital to be treated for lesser injuries.

The woman, who is believed to be in her 30s, was walking alongside the main Dublin Rd into Balbriggan at 12.30pm when she was hit.

The road was closed for a full investigation to establish how the incident happened. Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact Balbriggan station on 01 8412202.

Separately, a man in his 30s was injured in a hit-and-run seconds after a car was stolen in Navan, Co Meath.

He was pushing his car, which had broken down, into a petrol station on the Proudstown Rd at 7.40am.

Moments earlier, a man had left his silver VW Golf car unattended in the forecourt and entered the shop to pay for fuel.

While he was in the shop, one of two opportunistic occupants of a blue Mercedes van nearby jumped into the car and sped off.

As the van fled the scene, it hit the unsuspecting motorist who was pushing his car into the petrol station.

The injured man was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda with suspected fractures but it is not thought his injuries are life-threatening.

The van was later found burnt out on the Dublin Rd outside Navan. The VW Golf, with a 07 KY registration plate, had not been recovered yesterday afternoon.
