Opposition parties have welcomed moves by Justice Minister Alan Shatter to set-up an independent regulatory authority for legal practitioners.

Mr Shatter made the move as the contentious and long delayed Legal Services Bill was thrashed out at committee stage.

Fianna Fáil justice spokesman Niall Collins said the initiative was a “common sense” one.
