Boston Marathon official race photographer Liz Cardoso was just metres away from one of the two bomb blasts that rocked last April’s race, killing three and injuring more than 200 people.

Instead of the expected images of triumph she was accustomed to seeing at a race finish line, she witnessed at all-too close quarters mayhem and mangled limbs, suffering and terror. Now, this April, she will return to the course and help place a massive banner of support along Boston’s 26-mile route, signed by more than 2,000 people at Clonakilty’s Waterfront Marathon last month.

The professional sports photographer was deeply shocked by the Apr 15 bombings on her city’s streets. The attack prompted her to broaden her horizons — although she wasn’t expecting those horizons to swell and span the Atlantic, to a small West Cork town in a chilly winter week.
