Gilroy seeks European nomination from party

Senator John Gilroy, a psychiatric nurse who lives in Glanmire, has confirmed he wants to replace sitting Ireland South Labour MEP Phil Prendergast.

Gilroy, 47, who was elected to the Seanad in 2011 after narrowly missing out on a Dáil seat in Cork North Central, claims he has the backing of senior party figures for his bid.

“Personally I think there should only be one candidate on the ticket. I served on Cork County Council from 2004 to 2011 and I have since gained more experience in the Senate.”

Clonmel, Co Tipp-based MEP Phil Prendergast has confirmed she will seek re-election and Senator Gilroy said he welcomed the competition and wouldn’t be surprised if others also sought the nomination.

Some party activists believe it would be more advantageous to have a candidate from the Cork area, where its support is strong.

However, others maintain Ms Prendergast has performed well as an MEP and built a significant profile.
