Finance Minister Michael Noonan has said Ireland can still cut its debt significantly without getting a deal to offload historic bank debt.

His suggestion that Ireland can go it alone without help from the EU bailout fund to repay some of the €64bn in bank debt marks a major shift in Government policy.

Ministers also hinted at changes in taxation for single people, as well as the wealthy, down the line.
