Jennifer Lawrence most searched for star
Online entertainment site IMDb unveiled its top 10 stars of this year, as well as the top 10 emerging stars of 2013, and other year-end results.
The lists are determined by the actual page views of the more than 160m monthly unique users of IMDb.
“The big story this year is Jennifer Lawrence, who is literally ‘The Girl on Fire’,” said Keith Simanton, IMDb’s managing editor.
“She dominated much of the early awards season, when she won the Oscar for Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook.
“Then she re-ignited the latter half of the year as The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, lit up November with box office records. It’s also important to note that she dominated this year’s rankings, outpacing her nearest competitor, Chloë Grace Moretz, with 89% more page views.”
Lawrence is said to have earned $10m (€7.3m) in a combination of salary, bonuses and escalators from the latest Hunger Games release.
Leonardo Di Caprio took third place on the list, followed by Ryan Gosling and Tom Hardy, who played Bane in the last Batman release, The Dark Knight Rises.
“Chloë Grace Moretz has also experienced a significant rise over the last several years, moving from 55 on our Top Stars of 2011 chart, to number 17 in 2012.
“She catapulted from number 17 to number two in 2013 — an impressive accomplishment that was fuelled by fan interest in the remake of Carrie and her film Kick-Ass 2.
“Television played an increasingly important role in the rankings this year, with Game of Thrones enjoying a particularly strong showing,” said IMDb’s TV editor, Melanie McFarland.
“Lena Headey, who stars as the ruthless Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones, first made an appearance on our 2012 Top Stars list at number 43 and jumped to 13 this year. Emilia Clarke [who plays Daenerys Targaryen] followed closely behind her at 17… The men of Breaking Bad had a strong showing as well, with Bryan Cranston at 39 and Aaron Paul at 66 overall.”
Meanwhile, Steve McQueen’s historic saga 12 Years a Slave, David O Russell’s con artist romp American Hustle, Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station and Alfonso Cuaron’s space odyssey Gravity all feature on the American Film Institute’s top-10 movies of the year.
The list is regarded as an indicator of the films that will be in the running for best film at the Oscars. The choices come ahead of the Golden Globe nominations tomorrow as the awards season gets under way.
Also landing on the list are Captain Phillips; Spike Jonze’s computer love tale Her; the Coen brother’s dark comedy Inside Llewyn Davis; Disney comedy Saving Mr Banks; and Martin Scorsese’s stockbroker story The Wolf of Wall Street.
The creative assemblages will be awarded at a Jan 10 luncheon in Los Angeles.
