A search on classified ads website donedeal.ie revealed sellers demanding between €500 and €1,000 for the PlayStation 4. Its retail price is €399.

Xbox One consoles were going for between €500 and €800, with people also offering to swap brand new iPhone 5 smartphones for the product. The normal retail price for the Xbox One is €499.

The PS4 went on sale here on Nov 29 for people who had pre-ordered the console. A limited number were available to buy on a first-come, first-served basis. Supply is expected to be scarce in the run-up to Christmas.

On donedeal.ie, one seller in Westmeath is asking for €1,000 for a “brand new, unopened PS4 bundle”, while another in Wexford is asking for €950 but warns that the product will not be available “until after Christmas”. A host of other offers are available on the site, the vast majority in excess of €700.

Retailer Game said demand for pre-orders of the PS4 were four times higher than with the PS3. The chain said that pre-orders showed Irish fans to be the most eager gamers in the world, with pre-orders stronger in Ireland than any other country.

Sony has described demand for the console as “phenomenal”.

The technology giant confirmed yesterday that total sales of the PS4 have now topped 2.1m units.

This includes 700,000 units sold through Europe and Australasia, which had a slightly later launch than in the US and Canada.

Sony Computer president and group chief executive Andrew House said demand for the console was now outstripping supply.

“Demand remains incredibly strong and continues to overwhelm the supply worldwide, but we are diligently working to meet those growing demands and to deliver additional PS4 units to our retail partners throughout the holiday season,” he said.
