Aqua Dome criticised for seeking cleaning intern

One of Kerry’s leading tourist attractions, the Aqua Dome water park in Tralee, has defended the advertisement of a cleaning position on the JobBridge intership scheme.

Aqua Dome criticised for seeking cleaning intern

Tralee town councillor Pa Daly (SF) called on the Aqua Dome to withdraw its advert for a cleaner, saying it could not possibly take nine months to learn how to clean.

Aqua Dome manager Kieran Ruttledge said Sinn Féin had got the wrong end of the stick and had also seriously underestimated the responsibilities attached to the job of cleaning and customer care at the water facility which the internship actually encompassed.

The advert appeared on Monday for a 39-hour-a-week, nine-month internship at the Aqua Dome.

Mr Daly said he was disappointed that one of Kerry’s leading tourist attractions would use such an “unfair” scheme, adding: “JobBridge is actually preventing real job creation.”

Mr Ruttledge said: “We were approached. It was the applicant who was looking for us to do so. We have been approved by the scheme and now we are advertising the position.”

The JobBridge advert states: “The intern will receive formal/informal training in the following: use of cleaning machines, buffing machines and cleaning techniques. On completion the intern will have attained skills in all aspects of cleaning operations along with cleaning machine operations. Aspects of this position will include customer care.”
