Details of €11m in cuts have yet to be decided by Education Minister Ruairi Quinn, but could see smaller amounts spent on teacher training and further education next year.

He announced no new cuts for schools for 2014 in the budget last month, although small primary schools will see rolling changes to staffing levels continue. Also flagged in previous budgets was the fact that all schools will have another 1% cut to their day-to-day-funding. But Mr Quinn has yet to find where €11m of the €44m savings earmarked for his department will come from.

In response to queries from the Irish Examiner, the department said the task of analysing final 2013 spending has been more difficult than normal because of the budget taking place with more than two months of the year left.
