The creation of new playgrounds, tourism and heritage projects and much needed construction jobs in West Cork hangs on whether the Department of the Environment agrees to provide Leader funding to 27 groups.

Viability of Cork projects rests on Leader funding

The €4 million in projects require €3m of State aid to kick-start them in the region and the department is currently carrying out a review of whether it will provide grant aid through additional Leader funding, which would be funnelled through the West Cork Development Partnership.

WCDP chief executive Ian Dempsey recently confirmed that its allocation of €9.8m for the period 2009-2015 had been allocated in full and that further project approvals would be subject to the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government providing additional funds.
