Aldi’s €20 bubbly tops €170 rivals in taste test

Aldi has announced that it will be selling a €19.99 bottle of champagne this Christmas that international wine experts rated better than some of the world’s most renowned champagnes that cost up to 10 times more.

In a blind test, Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut was awarded a silver medal at the International Wine Challenge 2013, trumping contenders including Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2004 (€169.95) and Möet & Chandon Imperial NV (€46.60), both of which received bronze awards.

Aldi customers in Britain can get the non-vintage bubbly even cheaper, at £12.99 (€15.25).

The champagne, which will be available in Irish Aldi stores from Nov 24, was described as “classy and complex” by the judges.

Group buyer Rob Farrell said: “At Aldi, we believe Irish consumers don’t need to pay superstar prices for super quality drinks. Our expert team of buyers work closely with some of the world’s leading wineries to enable us to deliver high quality own-label bottles at unbeatable prices.”
