Now, RTÉ says the welcome back for John Murray will also leave him glowing.

The popular radio presenter, who has been on sick leave since the end of April, is to return to work on his Radio One slot from Monday, Nov 4.

“Everyone at RTÉ is delighted to have John back and we’re really looking forward to working with him again,” said a spokeswoman for the broadcaster.

She said his hour-long programme, which retained the John Murray Show title during his absence, would continue along its current format, which has been preserved by stand-in Miriam O’Callaghan.

Miriam, who is also a Prime Time presenter on RTÉ television, will now go back to her previous radio slot, the Miriam Meets programme on Sunday mornings.

The knock-on effect of this move is that the 10-week-run of Aoibhinn and Company, presented by Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin in the Miriam Meets slot, will now come to an end.

Father-of-two John, 49, has not spoken publicly about the illness that kept him off air, bucking a recent trend by RTÉ personalities to recount their battles with illnesses such as cancer and depression.

RTÉ would not comment either, describing it as a matter of personal choice as to whether employees decided to speak openly about such issues.

The public response to John’s illness was enormous, with the station deluged with get-well cards and messages of support.
