Taoiseach Enda Kenny has called for party leaders to come together and work out “meaningful” plans to make the Seanad more effective.

Fianna Fáil’s Micheál Martin expressed concern that the move was a ploy by the Taoiseach to ignore calls for major reform, as he cited recent Government proposals to overhaul the Dáil which he said were railroaded through and have only resulted in TDs “sitting more to do less”.

Mr Martin said the Dáil could move swiftly and push forward a bill on a Seanad reform package already drawn-up by independent TD Shane Ross.
