Silver lining for couple who missed honeymoon

Couples were ushered down the aisle and invited to take a stroll down memory lane as Cork’s Silver Springs Moran Hotel hosted a showcase to celebrate 50 years of weddings at the venue.

Those in attendance included couples who were married at the venue over the years, whose wedding pictures adorned the walls.

Guests were also treated to an exhibition of wedding memorabilia, and a vintage wedding dress fashion show.

There were also prize giveaways, with Jeanette and Gus Delaney scooping a €2,000 holiday voucher. “I’m still shocked,” said Jeanette. “It’s a honeymoon really because we didn’t have a first one.”

Just before the couple tied the knot in 1965, Gus narrowly escaped with his life when the building he worked in — Robert Scott & Co — burned down.

Due to the loss of his job, the couple were unable to afford a honeymoon. Jeanette said she was over-the-moon about the voucher. “We don’t know where we’re going to go yet, we just can’t get over the shock of it all.”

Claire and John O’Mahony were runners up, and won two nights and an evening meal at the Red Cow Moran Hotel in Dublin.

Claire said: “My husband saw that the Silver Springs were looking for people married there in the last 50 years. I thought it would be nice to get involved.

“Next March we’ll be 49 years married. It was a lovely, bright, crisp day for a wedding and it had been snowing,” she recalled.

“I still have the receipt for the day — it came to £50, three shillings, and six pence — it was the best food and the bar was open all day.”

Tracey Moran, director of communications for Moran and Bewley’s Hotels, said: “We knew there had to be some fantastic stories and pictures from all those ‘big days’ waiting to be shared. So we decided to hold an event to capture all those happy memories in one room.”

There was a terrific turnout, she said, highlighting what a special night it was, not only for the couples, but for staff as well.

“We’re looking forward to many more happy weddings at the Silver Springs.”
