Man’s condition ‘critical’ after being found on quay

Gardaí in Cork City are trying to establish what happened to a man in his 30s that resulted in him ending up in hospital, fighting for his life.

Man’s condition ‘critical’ after being found on quay

According to Garda sources the man was found collapsed on a quay in the city centre on Thursday night.

The man, aged 36, who is Irish but not originally from the city, was discovered at St Patrick’s Quay, near the back of the Metropole Hotel at 10.05pm.

He was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, where he is said to be in a critical condition.

Gardaí were yesterday awaiting a full medical report on the man, which might shed light on what led to him being found lying on the ground.

They are also studying CCTV footage in the area to see whether he may have been involved in an altercation with another person or a number of people, or if he accidentally fell and injured himself.

The CCTV trawl will also be used to establish his movements prior to entering St Patrick’s Quay.

In the meantime, gardaí are appealing for the public’s help, and in particular they want to talk to anybody who was in the general area of St Patrick’s Quay between 9pm and 10.30pm that night.

“We would appeal to anybody who was in that area and saw anything that could be of help to us in our investigation to contact us as soon as possible,” a Garda source said.

Anybody with information is asked to contact Mayfield Garda Station on 021 455 8510, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
