Franciscan Well brewery scoops world beer awards

Cork’s Franciscan Well brewery has won two top awards at the prestigious World Beer Awards.

The brewery, located on the North Mall, won the gold medal and Best Amber Ale in the European section of the awards for its popular ale Rebel Red as well as picking up a bronze medal in the European section for its Coffee Porter.

The World Beer Awards is the most prestigious competition for beer globally. The annual tasting selects, awards and promotes the World’s Best Beers to consumers and the trade.

The Franciscan Well was the only Irish brewery to win at the event.

Shane Long, one of the founders of the brewery, said it was a “massive achievement” for the brewery as it prepares to go into the export market.

“It really doesn’t get any bigger than the World Beer Awards and for a small brewery like us to be going up against the biggest players in the world and winning, well it’s just huge for us,” he said.
