Mary said the 1950s- style Happy Days video is making serious waves in Ireland, the UK and US. The East Cork woman “didn’t get out of her dressing gown yesterday” as the phone was hopping all day long with calls, emails and texts from fans and media reacting to their latest offering.
The video, filmed by Mick Bracken from Mullingar and directed by Crystal Swing, was the trio’s brainchild. Mary stars as Miss Humming Bottom, daughter Dervla is Candy Boo Boo, and son Derek is Rockin’ Ricky.
“We sat down at the kitchen one day and just planned the video all out. I love acting myself, I become a different person, totally immersed in the role. The footage was hilarious, it was such a pity we couldn’t use it all. We nearly had enough for a film,” she said.
The Happy Days video was first aired on the Hot Country satellite channel on Monday night and then uploaded on YouTube. The extras were all played by locals in the East Cork area and the video was shot at St Colman’s Community College in Midleton and Eddie Rockets’ in Blackpool.
Within 48 hours online, it had 65,000 hits and just like their mammoth hit, He Drinks Tequila, it was being loved and loathed in equal measure.
“I’m amazed with the reaction we’ve got. It’s trending on Youtube in Ireland. With the video we just wanted to show another side to the band, that we can laugh at ourselves. You have to keep on reinventing your- self,” she said. “I really am living my childhood dream at the moment. I feel so young when I’m out there with Derval and Derek performing and making videos.”
