Rebel captain leads drive to refurbish children’s ward

The Bishopstown midfielder, who is a patron of the Cork University Hospital (CUH) Charity, is leading a recruitment drive for hundreds of volunteers to get involved in a massive fundraising event to help sick children across Munster.
The charity needs 300 people to man up to 50 “checkpoints”, which will be set up around the city and county on Cork Independence Day — Oct 1 — as part of the Cork Rebel Week celebrations.
Visitors to the county will be asked to buy special “visas” at the county boundaries.
All the money raised will help refurbish CUH’s cramped children’s unit.
The outdated unit, which treats almost 10,000 sick children annually, hasn’t had any major refurbishment since it was built in 1978.
“I’m honoured to captain the Cork team at Croker and I’m equally proud to champion the cause for Cork Independence Day as patron of CUH Charity,” Pa said.
“I’m urging all those who can to sign up to join me as a volunteer on the day.”
The CUH Charity plans to revamp the children’s unit by providing new bathing and breastfeeding facilities, sleeping facilities for parents in the Ladybird Ward which caters for children under 18 months old, and to install isolation facilities, a high-dependency unit, en-suite rooms and sleeping facilities for parents in the Puffin Ward.
It is also hoped to provide more toilets, baby changing facilities, a counselling room, palliative care facilities and a sensory area for children with special needs.
