AIB ‘inflates’ number of debt deals

AIB have deliberately “bolstered” its debt resolution figures by including nearly 6,000 legal letters in the total, the chairman of the influential Oireachtas finance committee has revealed.

Ciarán Lynch, a Labour TD for Cork South Central, called on the Central Bank governor to urgently intervene in the matter and clarify what counts as a mortgage solution under rules aimed at easing the pressure on families in debt misery.

Banks were tasked with making sustainable resolution offers to 20% of distressed customers by the end of June, but Mr Lynch said the issuing of what AIB described as 5,894 “legal options” should not be included in the 8,600 “solution” offers claimed by the bailed-out institution.
