Gardaí investigating a hit-and-run accident near Bundoran, Co Donegal, have taken possession of a car.

Abandoned car examined following fatal hit-and-run

A senior officer said it is undergoing an examination to establish whether it was the car involved in the tragedy. It was found on Sunday night about a kilometre from the scene of Sunday morning’s accident, at Ardfarn, Bundoran.

The car under investigation was found, abandoned, outside a farmhouse off Church Rd.

Part of a car’s remains were found near where victim Alan McSherry, who was walking, was struck.

Garda forensics officers were attempting to establish if the pieces matched the abandoned car.

Mr McSherry, aged 48, died near his home at Boyannagh, Co Leitrim, while walking on a narrow, rural road at Ardfarn after socialising in Bundoran on Saturday night.

His body was discovered by his wife, Jo, after she noticed missed calls on her phone. When she rang her husband she received no answer, and drove from their home to Bundoran 3km away. She found the body a short distance away from their home at 5.10am on Sunday morning.

The couple arrived in a camper-van in Bundoran 15 years ago from their home in the Birkenhead area of England and decided to stay as they loved surfing.

Mr McSherry worked locally as a maintenance man and his wife worked at the Donegal Adventure Centre.

They had no children.

An autopsy was carried out on Sunday night by Michael Curtis, the deputy state pathologist, at Sligo General Hospital.

Gardaí have appealed to the driver responsible to come forward.
