The father of one of the two women awaiting trial for trying to smuggle cocaine worth €1.7m out of Peru said they should plead guilty.

Michaella McCollum, from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, and Melissa Reid, from Glasgow, have been formally charged with the promotion of drug trafficking, and face a maximum of 15 years in prison if convicted. It could be three years before they even face trial.

William Reid said that he is not totally convinced by the women’s story and urged his daughter to change her plea to guilty to reduce her sentence.
