Emergency landing at Shannon

A passenger jet carrying more than 200 people suffered engine problems over the Atlantic yesterday forcing the crew to divert to Shannon Airport.

Delta Airlines flight DL-075 was en route from Milan in Italy to Atlanta, Georgia in the US. The flight was due to depart Milan at 10.50am local time but did not take off until 1.13pm. It is not known what caused the delay.

At around 3.00pm, the flight with 209 passengers and 11 crew was about an hour into its Atlantic crossing, the crew contacted air traffic controllers at Ballygirreen in Co Clare to advise them that they needed to divert to the nearest airport. The captain confirmed they had to shut down one of the Boeing 767’s engines.
