Munster stars leg it to build team spirit

Call it team-building, call it silly season, call it a stroke of marketing genius, but the groups of Munster rugby players racing around the province on foot are proving a huge Twitter hit.

Perhaps inspired by their Ulster counterparts who ventured coast-to-coast from Belfast to Bundoran for their ‘Fleefly’ project earlier this week, it’s currently Munster’s turn to hit the highroads and byroads.

Players were divided into six groups and told on Tuesday of their trek, which began after yesterday morning’s training session, in six towns around Munster. The groups are without food, transport, or accommodation and each has a hitlist of towns to visit before racing to Youghal in East Cork this evening.

Using the hashtag #munsterrace, players are relying on Twitter to find them a lift, some grub, or a bed for the night, in exchange for posing for photographs, coaching youngsters or, in some cases, mucking in.

While none of the province’s Lions’ contingent are taking part as they will return to pre-season action later, new captain Peter O’Mahony and Ireland locks Donnacha Ryan and Donncha O’Callaghan are among the well-known faces participating.

Diamond Rocks cafe in Kilkee made one Munster group don aprons in exchange for some munch, while Clare FM presenter Ciara Revins stumbled on the same players hovering near a well-known pub in the Banner county.

“They were stopped outside a well-known pub called Fanny O’Dea’s, presumably looking to get a few pictures with the sign.”

Skibbereen RFC was packed to the rafters for the players’ visit by the looks of a photo tweeted by Johne Murphy.

Players have been asked to photograph and video landmark people and places along the way before presenting highlights of their trip in Youghal tonight.
