Building work on a new €3.8m library on the northside of Cork city is due to start within weeks.

Building work on library to begin within weeks

The library, funded by a combination of national and local authority funding, will be built on the grounds of Terence MacSwiney Community College in Hollyhill, with work expected to take about 18 months to complete.

Cllr Tony Fitzgerald (FF) welcomed the news, which has been confirmed by city manager Tim Lucey.

“I’m delighted with the news that after a very long campaign by local people, the area will have a brand new library on the school grounds,” he said.

It is expected the construction will provide employment for 60 people.

The four staff managing the temporary library at Foyle Avenue will be transferred to the new building when it’s finished.

Four apartments will be handed back to the city’s housing department when the library relocates to the new purpose-built facility.

The city librarian Liam Ronayne, the city architect’s department, the board of Terence MacSwiney Community College, and Ted Owens of the VEC have all worked on the project.
