Gardaí may have cut cannabis supply line to Cork
Members of the Cork Regional Drugs Unit struck as a drugs handover was taking place at a secluded spot near Fivemilebridge, between Cork and Kinsale.
Sources say gardaí were alerted to a potential handover by the Dublin-based National Drugs Unit.
At about 4.30pm, gardaí arrested two men at the scene and recovered 25kg of cannabis resin.
“We can confirm that gardaí intercepted a drugs exchange,” said a senior garda source. “Two males were arrested at the scene. One is in his late 30s and early 40s. Both are Irish and one is from Dublin and the other from Cork.”
The source declined to say if either man were known to gardaí for drug-dealing.
They were taken to Togher Garda Station, where they are being held last night under Section 2 of the Drugs Trafficking Act.
Under that legislation, the men can be detained for up to seven days before gardaí have to release or charge them with an offence.
“Hopefully this operation will help us cutting the supply line of cannabis into the Cork region,” said the garda source.
