A teenager has been charged with murder following an 18-month investigation into the death of a man after a melee at a pub in Cork.

Det Sgt Dave Treacy arrested Dean Crinnion, aged 19, of 1 Blackwater Grove, Togher, Cork, and charged him with the murder of Gerard Delaney at Lower Friars Walk, Ballyphehane, Cork, on Dec 27, 2011

A number of men have been before the courts arising out of a melee at the Manhattan Bar on that occasion. Mr Crinnion is the only person to be charged with murder.

The teenager made no reply when was arrested, charged, and cautioned, the detective said yesterday at Cork District Court.

As well as being charged with murdering Gerard Delaney, Mr Crinnion is also charged with engaging with others in a violent disorder and producing a weapon, namely a knife, on the same date and place.

Solicitor Frank Buttimer, applied for free legal aid to represent Mr Crinnion, who is in receipt of a state allowance. Judge Leo Malone assigned Mr Buttimer.

Any possible bail application on a murder charge cannot be made at the district court, it would have to be made at the High Court in Dublin.

The case was adjourned until Thursday when Mr Crinnion will appear by video link from prison.
