Suspect in garda’s murder believed to have fled to US

The man, who is in his 20s, left earlier this month and well-placed Garda sources say he entered the US illegally.

His location is believed to be known to gardaí. One Garda source described the suspect as of immense interest to the investigation.

A bench warrant has already been issued for him by a court in the Republic because he failed to turn up to face the case. It is now believed that was because he was out of the country.

At the case, the State told the judge it believed he had gone to the US but “we can’t prove that”.

The investigating garda told the judge the accused was aware of the date and knew he was to be in court. The judge then issued a warrant for his arrest.

Det Garda Donohoe, 41, was shot in the head on Jan 25 as he approached a gang of five at a car in the grounds of a credit union in Jenkinstown, Co Louth.

A stolen 08-D navy Volkswagen Passat, used in the attack, was later found burnt out near a forest in south Armagh.
