Bear essentials as teddy passports prove a big hit

When a Cork woman came up with the idea of issuing teddy passports, little did she think Irish mammies would start buying them for emigrating sons and daughters.

Bear essentials as teddy passports prove a big hit

Teddypassports.com was officially launched by Catherine Lougheed earlier this month. She was inspired as she watched a friend cajoling an anxious 5-year-old onto a plane. As Catherine looked on, the mum tried everything from trying to get the child excited about having his own passport to telling him Teddy couldn’t wait to get on the plane.

“So where’s Teddy’s passport then?” he asked.

“I just sat there and thought, ‘why not?’ Also at the time, I was enjoying watching Gerry Adams tweet about his teddy bear and we were at the height of the debate about horse passports.”

So, in collaboration with the minister for toyland affairs, teddy passports were born.

“There’s been a great reaction so far. People are loving them as presents, especially Irish people living abroad with their kids.

“The best has been a group of mums buying them for their grown-up kids as they emigrated.

“We’ve also issued dolly passports for summer holidays.”

Passports can be bought at teddypassports.com where the teddy’s name, the child’s name, and a picture can be uploaded. Unlike regular passports, they are guaranteed to arrive in 7-10 days. Teddy Passports, which are also on Facebook, cost €8.99.
