Ireland’s performance in a European-wide audit of meat products has been welcomed after horse DNA was found in only a fraction of samples.

However, the European Commission said the evidence from across the EU reaffirmed the belief there was widespread food fraud at the centre of the scandal.

The commission survey said 50 tests were carried out by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) and these found no traces of horse DNA.
