Woman, 22, questioned after knife attack at school
The woman, from Ennis, was arrested by gardaí shortly after the alleged assault after 5pm on Saturday at the Holy Family primary school, which left the 23-year-old victim with 17-20 stab wounds on the upper body, including a punctured lung and cuts to her head and neck.
If the DPP directs that the woman be charged, she will be brought before a district court today.
The victim’s injuries were initially described as life-threatening and she was removed from the Mid-West Regional Hospital at Limerick to Cork University Hospital.
Her condition improved yesterday and was described as serious but stable.
The woman being questioned is a settled member of the Travelling community, while the woman who sustained the multiple injuries is a member of the settled community.
It is understood the women are well-known to each other and were drinking together on Saturday before going to the grounds of the Holy Family primary school in Ennis.
CCTV cameras in the area captured extensive footage of the assault and gardaí were trying to determine a motive behind the attack.
The 22-year old woman was arrested in the nearby Dunnes Stores shopping complex with blood stains on her clothing.
She was being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
A technical examination of the scene was carried out yesterday and inquiries are ongoing.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, particularly anybody in the vicinity of Friar’s Walk, Station Rd, the shopping centre car park, or the primary school between 4.30pm and 5pm
It is the second violent incident to take place on the grounds of the Holy Family primary school in the last 13 months.
At Ennis Circuit Court last week, a 22-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy pleaded guilty to a charge of violent disorder on the grounds of the school in March of last year.
Sentencing in that case was adjourned until June.
