The Government is to offer grant aid to fishermen for personal distress and location beacons as part of a new marine safety measure.

Marine Minister Simon Coveney has confirmed the initiative will be launched in June in Union Hall, West Cork — the scene of the Tit Bonhomme trawler tragedy.

“We have to learn from a whole series of tragedies off the Irish coast,” Mr Coveney said yesterday.
