More families are in mortgage difficulty in Meath East than the national average, according to the Fianna Fáil senator Thomas Byrne in his battle to win a seat in the constituency in tomorrow’s by-election.

Both Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin focused on mortgage problems and the unpopular property tax in their final push for votes from the large commuter belt part of the constituency which saw the biggest surge of new homes during the boom years.

On the last day of campaigning before the broadcasting moratorium set in, Fianna Fáil launched a bill to establish an independent mortgage resolution office.
