A teenage boy is in a serious but stable condition after being stabbed on Saturday night in Westport in Mayo.

Gardaí are waiting to interview the 17-year-old, who was admitted to intensive care at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar on after he was attacked and stabbed.

The victim, who is from the Westport area, sustained serious injuries in the altercation, which occurred in Railway Walk in Westport at around 11pm on Saturday.

Following the vicious attack, the teenager was rushed by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Three teenagers, who are described by gardaí as “not local to Westport town”, were arrested following the incident. The three, all in their late teens, were held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows them be held without charge for 24 hours.

Two of the suspects were being questioned in Castlebar Garda Station last night, while the third was being detained in Westport.

A Garda forensic team was yesterday carrying out a detailed examination of the scene at Railway Walk, where the incident took place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at 098 50230 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

They are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who was in the Railway Walk area of Westport on Saturday between 10.30pm and 11pm.
